Off Book is a half-hour mockumentary comedy set inside a hyper-ambitious community theatre determined to operate like a Broadway institution... with none of the resources to support it. In this world, auditions feel political, casting decisions feel personal, and every role has the power to reshape someone’s sense of self.
The series follows Lauren Penski, a talented and grounded performer who keeps doing everything right, and keeps getting passed over anyway. When she’s cast as the understudy to an influencer-performer with more visibility than experience, Lauren is forced to remain on the sidelines of a production that should have been hers. As rehearsals unfold, tensions rise between talent and perception, authenticity and performance, and the increasingly blurred line between what’s real and what’s curated.
Told through a mockumentary lens, Off Book blends heightened comedic absurdity with grounded emotional stakes, capturing the quiet devastation (and resilience) of being overlooked in a world that rewards visibility over ability. As egos clash, showmances form, and the production spirals toward opening night, Lauren must decide whether being “good” is something she’s meant to wait on...or something she’s finally ready to fight for.
